Objective and brief Description of the
Student
Exchange on International Health and Development (SEIHD)
Objective
To give a basic understanding of
Developmental issues in Garhwal and to field test SIHI Health Manual, explore
its potentials for this region and to decide wht further needs to be done for
it.

Fourteen students, Six weeks (3rd May to 14th
June, 2001)
Curriculum
Overview of main modules:
1.
Introductory course of ten days in Dehradun (Rachna Guest house):
Explores main issues involved in contemporary Development in Indian Himalayas,
specially Uttaranchal. Day trips to Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussoorie, to study
life in general and visit institutions of special interest.
2.
Field Study for twenty days in Jan Vikas Sansthan, Chirbatiya. This will provide the
actual feel of rural community, life in a voluntary agency working in the
Himalayas and real life situations to explore relevance, applicability,
design and contents of the SIHI Health Manual.
3.
Eco-trek from Chirbatiya to Lata near Uttarkashi, via Budha-kedar and Belak Khal
(about Ten days): It will give a bird’s eye view of changing topography and
environment (which affects livelihood and habitat so intimately) and life in
small habitations enroute. Optional climb of Kush Kalyan (3820 metres).
4.
Review and Debriefing in Dehradun for last 3-4 days before wind up. This will
include appraisals and feedback to improve the course in future and a detailed
review and planning session for the ongoing SIHI Health Manual Project.
