Q: What could be the most appropriate training methodology for traditional birth attendants (TBAs) in Jaunsar? Why?

Answer: TBA’s should be trained using a methodology that embraces their tradition as well as modern ideas of sanitation. Because many TBAs are not literate, trainers must incorporate pictures, skits and examples. It is important that training be done in a central location and TBAs must be informed in advance…  Some TBAs claim to know everything already (Tungroli one did), so recruiters must use creative methods to encourage TBAs to come. Once the TBAs are at the training, it is helpful to stress the ‘five cleans’ and then go through the birth process chronologically.; At each section the trainer should not just lecture, but ask the TBAs about their knowledge and create a dialogue.. It is helpful to use pictures and act out the processes. It is important to keep the wording non-technical and in a cultural context….

Safe, spiritual or traditional practices should be encouraged and hygiene should be stressed above all else..

Q: Describe architecture of the rural Jaunsari houses and the reasons behind it.

Answer: From what I have observed and remember, a typical Jaunsari house will have approximately 2-3 rooms. The houses are made up of wood or brick and have roofs , which are composed of slabs of flat stone. The material used to build the houses is most likely for water proofing and for protection from harsh winds and storms. The slabs of stones on the roof can often be shifted to allow light in to the rooms.. The houses are quite small but there may be quite a large family living there in. The houses are built on slopes or hills among the various crop fields belonging to that family…. The houses are in close proximity.. The reason for this could be to have a sense of community.. And to maintain human interactions..
